    Default So my cancer...

If you follow the local news, you've probably seen some of the discussion of the cancer cluster in North County (links below). It was partly my diagnosis and my obsessive FB posting that got some of my (very smart) friends wondering about things. We started with what I thought was a pretty astonishing list of people who had cancer, but its growing by the day. So, if you're from the Florissant and Hazelwood area you might 1) find this interesting, 2) know someone who has a rare disease that doesn't know they're not alone, and 3) might be susceptible -- make sure you see a doctor regularly.

On my mind: How can I shut up the singing English graduate student? How many more lossess will KU's basketball team have than its football team? How will the Rams front office screw up this year?

"Appendix cancer is a very rare cancer. About 1000 cases are diagnosed each year in this country," explained Dr. Rama Suresh, oncologist at Washington University and Siteman Cancer Center.

One thousand cases per year nationwide and yet, in four square miles of North County, there are 13 reported cases.

"How many people grew up in Chesterfield during that same time and had appendix cancer? None," said Riley.

The Facebook page organizers are creating a data base of the types of cancers, birth defects and illnesses primarily in the Florissant and Hazelwood areas of North County.

Three weeks ago there were 700 reported cases. Now, there are more than 1,500. While the reporting is a grassroots unscientific effort, medical professionals, like Dr. Suresh are taking notice.

I heard about this a couple weeks ago. I grew up in 63033 but I'm much younger than everyone reporting illnesses. Fortunately my parents grew up on the southside of 270 in North County.

I like how in the lede KSDK gives their I-team, whatever that is, credit for first reporting this, but then buried near the end they admit that the only reason it's come to light is Facebook (the people behind it; good for you, chiguy).

My great aunt lived in Florrisant for decades and died of lung cancer a few years ago. Certainly not a rare cancer like appendix cancer, but I don't know that she ever smoked or did anything else that would have increased her chances of lung cancer. I wonder if she lived in that part of town or not.

Mine too, only she died back in like 1992 or something. Never smoked a single time and got lung cancer in both lungs.

You need the appendix early on while in the womb, after that it's worthless.
